Honorary Consulate of Sweden in Kolkata

Consolato van Zweden in Kolkata, India

Panoramica

The Honorary Consulate of Sweden in Kolkata is the eastern and north-eastern Indian relay for the Embassy of Sweden in New Delhi, located at 15 Hemanta Basu Sarani in the Lal Bazar area of central Kolkata, near the Writers' Building and the High Court. The Honorary Consul, Ms Anjumit Nobis, provides light consular relay for Swedish nationals across West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Tripura. Schengen visa intake for the eastern Indian catchment is operated by VFS Sweden in Kolkata (separate facility); decisioning happens at the Embassy of Sweden in New Delhi. The Kolkata consular catchment includes the small but operationally important Swedish business community in the eastern Indian industrial belt — Tata Steel's Jamshedpur operations and the broader heavy-industry corridor; the Sikkim Buddhist circuit and the trekking-and-mountaineering flow into the eastern Himalayas; and the long-historical Indo-Nordic trading legacy that runs through the Bay of Bengal ports. Routine consular work remains with the Embassy in New Delhi; emergency support and on-the-ground response is the Honorary Consulate's primary role.

Area di Servizio

Bhutan is covered separately by the Honorary Consulate in Thimphu (also accredited through the Embassy in New Delhi). Note Speciali

The Honorary Consulate at 15 Hemanta Basu Sarani sits in the heritage Lal Bazar area of central Kolkata, close to the Writers' Building (the former East India Company secretariat) and the Calcutta High Court. The post operates Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday only — Monday and Friday are closed. The Honorary Consulate is operated by an Honorary Consul rather than a career Swedish diplomat — service is by appointment, with the working scope of an honorary post (consular relay, emergency assistance, document forwarding) rather than the full decisioning capability of the Embassy. The Honorary Consulate observes both Indian and Swedish public holidays.
