Grand Egyptian Museum

Cairo

Adjacent to the Pyramids of Giza on the Cairo–Alexandria Desert Road, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is the world's largest archaeological museum dedicated to a single civilisation. Opened in stages between 2024 and 2025 after more than two decades of construction, the museum holds more than 100,000 artefacts including the complete Tutankhamun collection of around 5,000 objects — assembled in one place for the first time since Howard Carter cleared the tomb in 1922. The triangular alabaster facade, designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, faces the pyramid plateau directly; the staircase atrium aligns visually with the three pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. Allow a full half-day. The museum is best combined with an early morning at the Giza plateau and lunch on site before the afternoon galleries.
